Mahale Mountains National Park

Named after the Mahale Mountains range, the Mahale Mountains National Park is the prime hotspot for Chimpanzee Trekking in Tanzania. The size of this national park and its remoteness supports the largest population of eastern chimpanzees.

Moreover, this national park supports a diverse array of habitats including rainforest, grasslands, alpine, bamboo and woodland, which is home to nearly 50 species of animals. Apart from the chimpanzees, the other wildlife you can spot here are colobus monkeys, squirrels, porcupines, mongooses and other classic African animals like lions, giraffes, zebras and other antelopes.

Best Time to visit

The best time to visit the Mahale Mountains National Park in Tanzania is during the dry season, which typically falls between May and October. During this time, the weather is generally pleasant with cooler temperatures, and there is a lower chance of rainfall. This allows for better wildlife viewing and hiking experiences as animals tend to congregate near water sources.  

Moreover, the dry season is ideal for exploring Lake Tanganyika, which borders the park and offers opportunities for swimming and snorkeling. Activities

Mahale Mountain National Pak caters for a wide range of activities that caters to the different interest and preference of visitors.  

Chimpanzee Trekking – Chimpanzee trekking is the biggest drawcard of Mahale Mountains National Park. This activity starts after a short brief meeting at the headquarters, and it lasts around 1 hour.

Chimpanzee trekking is carried out by chimpanzee trekkers and at a time a group of 6 people are allowed to trek and spot the chimpanzee in their natural habitat.

For Chimpanzee trekking the best time of the year is July to October.

Mountain Hiking – For, adventure junkies, Mahale Mountain National Park offers Mountain Hiking Safaris. Visitors can hike Mount Nkungwe, which is the highest mountain in this national park.

Hiking Mount Nkungwe takes 2-3 days to reach the peak and 1 to descend. May to October is the most optimal time to hike this mountain.

Sport Fishing – Sport Fishing in Mahale Mountain National Park is done at Lake Tanganyika. This lake has a designated spot for fishing. And, this activity is carried out from 7 in the morning to 5 in the evening.

Boat safaris – Boat Safaris are the most relaxing way to explore the wildlife and wilderness of Mahale Mountain National Park. On boat safaris, you can spot its teeming wildlife such as elephants, buffaloes, lions and rhinos.  

Cultural Tours – On a cultural tour in Mahale Mountains National Park, visitors can explore nearby villages of Holoholo and Batongwe people, Kigoma town, and the historical town of Ujiji.
